Virginia Jobs
Opening up Virginia's offshore areas to oil and natural gas development will add thousands of jobs for Virginians.
Analysts predict thousands of new jobs in Virginia if drilling were to take place in the waters offshore the Old Dominion. This would be on top of the more than 143,000 jobs the state has as a result of the oil and natural gas industry. The new jobs would be good, well paying jobs, both directly and indirectly associated with the industry.
While there would be numerous jobs involved in the production and exploration of the resources, associated industries would also see a boom. For example, the service industry, as well as the tourism industry and the shipbuilding industry – a major player in the military city of Norfolk – would also see additional job creation.
Virginia unemployment stands at 6.5 percent. The unemployment rate in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk region is slightly higher at 7.6 percent. The new jobs coming to this region would be a great asset to the community and help ensure the state’s economic and energy security.
